UPDATED Twitter Watch: 'Karate Kid' Asleep on the Gas

on June 08, 2010 by Alex Edghill

Tuesday Afternoon Update: The Karate Kid is currently at 2,520 tweets for the day so far or 6.3% market share. That's up significantly from yesterday's 4% market share, and it will surely end the day north of 3,300 tweets. The A-Team has shown moderate growth from Monday with 1,447 tweets so far and 3.6% market share, up from 1,478 tweets and 2.1% market share yesterday. While a bigger percentage growth from yesterday than The Kid it is still lagging way behind 2012 (2,864), Avatar (5,100), Clash of the Titans (3,789) and most other blockbuster action films in recent times.

In other news, Lottery Ticket has seen a nice bump today thanks to its clips on the Hip Hop awards, Harry Potter and Scott Pilgrim are both on the downside of the swell they received from the MTV music awards, and the Takers trailer premiere has caused its mentions to rise into the top 10.

Here is the Top 10 for today so far (as of 8PM UTC):

upcoming061110.jpgTuesday Morning Update: The Karate Kid remake came out of the gate flying with a very impressive 2,779 tweets on Monday and 4.0% market share. Twitter as a whole was booming thanks to the clips which debuted during the MTV Movie Awards. That and I've increased my window for looking at openers to seven months which greatly increases the total number of tweets being looked at. It has the better tweet ratings of the two films this week also, coming in with 26.27% positive and 6.54% negative. By comparison, Percy Jackson had 3,124 on its first Monday of release, while Alice in Wonderland had 12,001. Both of these comparison films ended up with ratios of around 2,000 and The Kid should be able to come in under that so this Monday figure is very positive and means it should be able to match or exceed Percy Jackson.

The A-Team did not fare so well on Monday, coming in with 1,478 tweets and a slight 2.1% market share. In terms of comparisons, 2012 had 2,290 its first Monday of release, Avatar had 4,040, Clash of the Titans had 2,632 and The Wolfman had 969. Its tweet ratings were a few points worse than The Karate Kid with 24.83% positive and 8.62% negative, but really not alarming and pretty much average. Considering the amount of marketing being pumped into the release and targeting the heart of the Twitter demographic this number is definitely underwhelming. As I said in my preview column I though there would be some overlap in the appeal of this and The Karate Kid but that shouldn't really interfere with its online buzz. There really is no getting around it, Monday's numbers just scream disappointing. Tuesday's numbers will be telling but unless it posts ridiculous gains there is no way this can open to $50 million.
