Based on the enthusiastic response to Vampires Suck, moviegoers are clearly ready to watch a film that pokes fun at the Twilight franchise.
According to the most recent WebWatch report, Vampires Suck holds a 14.56% share of online opinions among unreleased films. That puts it ahead of Eat Pray Love, The Expendables and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World even though it doesn't hit theaters until August 18.
Facebook support is also strong. The film's official page boasts more than 264,000 fans, which dwarfs the pre-release numbers of The Other Guys (190,000 fans eight days before release) and Grown Ups (125,000 fans), two of the summer's biggest comedies. On Twitter, Vampires Suck consistently ranks in the top 5 tweet counts.
"Vampires Suck has clearly gained a lot of awareness in the past week, but the big question is whether it's novelty and curiosity or definite interest in the film," says John Singh, a spokesperson for Flixster. "It has a high want-to-see rating among Flixster users but still very low activity - so it will be quite interesting to see whether it can translate into strong box office, or whether it's just a momentary spike in interest."
BoxOffice.com is currently predicting a $17 million opening weekend and a $40 million cume.
