'Dragons' Claims Top Spot; 'Back-up Plan' and 'Losers' Underwhelm

on April 24, 2010 by Phil Contrino

According to BoxOffice.com's Early Weekend Estimates, How to Train Your Dragon is on pace to finish in first place this weekend with $15.3 million. That's quite impressive considering that the animated flick is in its fifth weekend of release. After getting off to something of a slow start, Dragons is showing incredible staying power.

The Back-up Plan is headed for a second place finish with $12.2 million. While not a total disappointment, the opening is slightly underwhelming. Still, CBS Films has to be happy that the romantic comedy will double the meager $6.01 million opening of Extraordinary Measures.

Warner Bros. has a genuine dud on their hands in The Losers. The action flick is simply not catching on the way it could have, and it won't hit the $10 million mark this weekend.

After debuting below expectations, Kick-Ass is not holding its audience well. An unhealthy 56 percent drop is what the Lionsgate release is headed for this weekend.

Oceans is posting some solid numbers. The nature documentary is holding its own despite playing at only 1,206 locations.

Check back tomorrow for studio weekend estimates.
