In what should be its last day at the top of the box office, Paramount's Iron Man 2 led the daily box office for a 14th consecutive day on Thursday. The blockbuster superhero sequel grossed $3.04 million, which was down 3 percent from Wednesday and down 52 percent from last Thursday. After a significant decline last weekend, the film has stabilized some over the past few days. Iron Man 2 was easily the week's top film, with a weekly gross of $65.50 million. Iron Man 2 has grossed $224.66 million to date and is currently running 11 percent behind the pace of 2007's Spider-Man 3 and 17 percent ahead of 2008's Iron Man.
Universal's Robin Hood rounded out its first week in theatres with another second place performance. The big-budget re-teaming of director Ridley Scott and star Russell Crowe grossed $2.38 million on Thursday. Robin Hood was down 8 percent from Wednesday, which represented the day's poorest daily hold among wide releases. Robin Hood held up well on Monday and Tuesday, but clearly lost some momentum on Wednesday and Thursday. The film grossed $47.40 million in its first week of release. That was in line with expectations and good enough for second place for the frame.
Letters to Juliet remained in third with $1.10 million. The Summit release starring Amanda Seyfried was down 7 percent from Wednesday. Like Robin Hood, Letters to Juliet held up well on Monday and Tuesday, but lost some momentum during the latter half of the midweek. Letters to Juliet finished in third place for the week with $18.33 million. That was on the lower end of pre-release expectations and places the film 2 percent behind the pace of 2008's Made of Honor.
Fox Searchlight's Just Wright remained in fourth with $0.47 million. The basketball themed romantic comedy was unchanged from Wednesday, which represented one of the day's better daily holds among wide releases. Just Wright topped the $10 million mark yesterday and grossed $10.41 million in its first seven days. That was good enough for fourth place for the frame and was in line with expectations.
How to Train Your Dragon finished in sixth with $0.355 million. The computer animated blockbuster from Paramount and DreamWorks was up 6 percent from Wednesday and down only 12 percent from last Thursday. However, the film is still likely to take a significant hit this weekend with Shrek Forever After entering the marketplace today. Dragon has grossed $209.09 million through eight weeks, giving the film an impressive total gross to opening weekend ratio of 4.78 to 1.
