After falling to second place for a single day on Monday, Shrek Forever After returned to the top of the daily box office on Tuesday with $2.95 million. The fourth installment of the computer animated franchise from Paramount and DreamWorks was up a strong 21 percent over Monday and down 24 percent from last Tuesday. Shrek Forever After continues to hold up nicely and has now grossed $188.60 million through 19 days. This weekend the film will become the fourth release of 2010 to reach the $200 million domestic milestone.
Universal's Get Him to the Greek fell one spot to finish in second with $2.20 million. The R-rated comedy starring Jonah Hill and Russell Brand was down a sizable 12 percent from Monday. That was easily the day's sharpest decline among wide releases, though it is also very likely that the film took a bit of a hit from Game 3 of the NBA Finals. Get Him to the Greek has grossed $22.26 million through five days, which is in line with expectations and places the film 6 percent ahead of the pace of 2008's Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
Killers remained in third place with $1.71 million. The Lionsgate release starring Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl was up a solid 8 percent over Monday. Unlike Get Him to the Greek, Killers wasn't noticeably affected by the NBA Finals yesterday. Killers has grossed $19.13 million through five days of release. That is in line with pre-release expectations and means that the film will cross the $20 million mark today.
Sex and the City 2 was up one spot to place in fourth. The high-profile sequel was up a healthy 15 percent from Monday, but still down 52 percent from last Tuesday. Sex and the City 2 has grossed $76.20 million through 13 days of domestic release. That places the film 29 percent behind the pace of 2008's Sex and the City and 19 percent behind last year's Terminator Salvation.
Fox's Marmaduke was up a noteworthy 28 percent over Monday, but still had to settle for sixth place with $1.27 million. Marmaduke experienced the day's best daily hold among wide releases. However, after an underwhelming start Marmaduke needs to continue to hold up well going forward. That will be easier said than done with Sony's The Karate Kid and Disney's Toy Story 3 soon entering the marketplace.
