'Toy Story 3' and 'Twilight/New Moon Combo' strong on Tuesday. 'Grown Ups' down as 'Eclipse' nears.

‘Toy Story 3’ #1 on Eve of ‘Eclipse’

on June 30, 2010 by Daniel Garris

Disney's Toy Story 3 led the daily box office one last time on Tuesday with $8.22 million. The computer animated blockbuster has led the daily box office for twelve consecutive days, but will obviously see that streak come to an end today with the unleashing of Summit's The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.

Last night Eclipse grossed an estimated $30 million from midnight screenings, which will be counted towards Wednesday's opening day total. That set a new record for the largest midnight performance of all-time, as Eclipse eclipsed the $26.3 million midnight gross of last November's The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Check back tomorrow for the official opening day gross of Eclipse.

Before the debut of Eclipse, Summit screened a double feature of Twilight and New Moon in 2,037 locations. The one-day only Twilight/New Moon Combo grossed $2.39 million, which was good enough for third place for the day.

Turing back to Toy Story 3, the Pixar production was down 8 percent from Monday and down 46 percent from last Tuesday. After displaying tremendous holding power last week, Toy Story 3 has lost some momentum in recent days. With that said, the film's daily grosses are still incredibly strong at this point in the film's run. Toy Story 3 has grossed $244.03 million through 12 days and will overtake the unadjusted total grosses of both 2004's Cars ($244.08 million) and 1999's Toy Story 2 ($245.85 million) today. Toy Story 3 is likely to clear the $300 million mark sometime early next week.

Grown Ups remained in second place, but was down a sharp 14 percent from Monday in the process. The PG-13 comedy from Sony starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James and Chris Rock grossed $4.58 million for the day. According to data released by Sony this past weekend, Grown Ups is playing strong to female audiences under 25, so yesterday's decline on the eve of Eclipse makes sense. Grown Ups cleared the $50 million mark yesterday and has grossed $50.40 million through five days. The film continues to run essentially on par with 2006's Click.

Fox's Knight and Day finished in fourth. The action comedy grossed $2.129 million, which outpaced the $2.114 million gross of Sony's The Karate Kid by a slim $14,144. Knight and Day was down 2 percent from Monday, while The Karate Kid was down only 1 percent from Monday. Knight and Day has grossed a lackluster $31.72 million in its first week of release, while The Karate Kid has grossed a better than expected $140.04 million through 19 days.
