According to studio weekend estimates, Toy Story 3 is on pace for an impressive debut of $109 million. The strong opening finally helped June 2010's domestic haul take a three percent lead over June 2009. Overall receipts should total $196 million for the weekend, which means that 2010's total haul is 3.6 percent ahead of 2009's at the same point in the year.
Even though TS3 failed to top the opening weekend animation record set by Shrek the Third with $121.6 million, the debut is still easily #1 among Disney/Pixar films. The previous record holder was The Incredibles with $70.5 million. When adjusting for inflation, the record belonged to Finding Nemo with $92.6 million.
The Karate Kid managed to hold its ground in the face of Toy Story 3. The martial arts flick was able to cross the $100 million plateau
Jonah Hex is officially the biggest dud of the summer. The Warner Bros. release is on pace for a disastrous $5.08 million. While star Josh Brolin will escape unscathed, this could be the end of Megan Fox now that she won't be starring in Transformers 3.
Cyrus is off to a solid start at four locations. The quirky Fox Searchlight release posted $180,289 for a location average of 45,072.
