June 2010's domestic haul lost its lead over June 2009 this weekend--it's now behind by 5.3 percent--as Toy Story 3 claimed the #1 spot for the second weekend in a row. Overall receipts for this weekend will equal around $164 million.
Even though June 2010 is trailing June 2009, 2010's total domestic haul still has a two percent lead over 2009's at the exact same point in the year.
According to studio weekend estimates, Toy Story 3 is set to bring in $59 million during its sophomore frame. The Disney/Pixar effort took a decent hit from the emergence of Grown Ups and Knight and Day, but its take represents a strong hold for the summer months. TS3 could end up hitting the $250 million domestic plateau by this coming Friday.
Adam Sandler's latest effort marks the third highest 3-day debut of his career, and it's the sixth time a Sandler film has opened to more than $40 million. According to Sony, the film's audience was 47 percent male and 53 percent female with the demo skewing slightly younger. 52 percent was under the age of 25 and 48 percent was 25 and older. Grown Ups scored an A- CinemaScore rating from audiences 18 and younger.
While not a total disappointment, Knight and Day's estimated five-day take of $27.78 million is somewhat underwhelming. Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz put in quite a bit of effort promoting the film, but their star power seems to be waning. Moviegoers must also feel a strong sense of déjà vu after recently being exposed to the similarly-plotted Killers.
Check back tomorrow for studio weekend actuals.
