On Thursday Summit's The Twilight Saga: Eclipse became the sixth release of 2010 to gross at least $200 million at the domestic box office. With a daily gross of $7.93 million, the latest installment of the fantasy phenomenon remained at the top of the box office for a ninth consecutive day. Eclipse was down 10 percent from Wednesday, which represented the day's largest daily decline among wide releases. Thanks in part to very solid midweek grosses, Eclipse was easily the week's top film with a weekly take of $110.92 million. With a nine-day gross of $203.66 million, Eclipse is currently running 8 percent behind the pace of last year's The Twilight Saga: New Moon and 6 percent ahead of last year's Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
Disney's Toy Story 3 rounded out its third week in theatres with a second place finish of $5.15 million. The computer animated blockbuster from Pixar finished in third for the week with $59.40 million and has grossed $318.22 million in 21 days. While it will take a direct hit from Universal's Despicable Me this weekend, Toy Story 3 is still likely to hold up fairly well as a result of grosses being deflated last Saturday and Sunday by the Independence Day holiday. With that in mind, by the end of the weekend Toy Story 3 should overtake the $334.19 million gross of Alice in Wonderland to become the highest grossing domestic release of 2010 so far.
Paramount's The Last Airbender remained in third with $4.04 million. After experiencing a sharp 19 percent decline on Wednesday, the M. Night Shyamalan directed film was down a more reasonable 7 percent on Thursday. Though it finished behind Toy Story 3 each of the past four days, The Last Airbender was able to finish in second for the week with $65.57 million. The eight-day total for The Last Airbender stands at a very solid $83.08 million. The Last Airbender could reach the $100 million mark on Sunday, but will likely have to wait until Monday instead.
Sony's Grown Ups held steady in fourth with $3.25 million. The PG-13 comedy starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James and Chris Rock was down 2 percent from Wednesday and down a slim 21 from last Thursday. After a sharp second weekend decline last weekend, Grown Ups rebounded very nicely during the midweek. The film finished in fourth for the week with $36.33 million and has grossed $94.91 million through 14 days. Grown Ups is currently running 1 percent ahead of the pace of 2006's Click.
