After big declines over the weekend, 'Eclipse' is starting to hold much better during the midweek.

Strong Tuesday for ‘Eclipse’

on July 07, 2010 by Daniel Garris

After an extremely front-loaded performance during its first five days of release, Summit's The Twilight Saga: Eclipse held up quite nicely for a second straight day on Tuesday. The third installment of the fantasy franchise grossed $10.57 million for the day, which was down just 44 percent from Monday. Eclipse experienced the day's best daily hold among wide releases and was easily the top film of the day. The one-week total for Eclipse stands at $186.95 million, placing it a slim 0.6 percent behind the $188.08 million one-week start of last year's The Twilight Saga: New Moon and 5 percent ahead of the $177.46 million one-week start of last year's Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. With Eclipse having already having lost so much momentum over the past weekend, it is possible that the film could continue to stabilize throughout the rest of the midweek.

Disney's Toy Story 3 placed in second for the day with $5.94 million. The blockbuster computer animated sequel from Pixar was down 54 percent from Monday and down 28 percent from last Tuesday. Toy Story 3 has now grossed $307.82 million through 19 days of release, making Toy Story 3 the third highest grossing release of 2010 so far. Today will see Toy Story 3 zoom past Iron Man 2 to move into second place on the list.

Paramount's The Last Airbender grossed $5.39 million to finish in third. The big-screen adaptation of the popular Nickelodeon television series was down 53 percent from Monday. The film has grossed $74.70 million through six days of release, which represents a very solid start for the pricey production. The Last Airbender is currently running 14 percent ahead of 2004's The Village (the last film from director M. Night Shyamalan to reach the $100 million mark domestically).

Grown Ups claimed fourth place with $3.70 million. Sony's PG-13 comedy held up well yesterday, as it was down 47 percent from Monday and down only 19 percent from last Tuesday. Grown Ups has grossed a better than expected $88.34 million through twelve days of release and will cross the $90 million mark today.

Fox's Knight and Day rounded out the day's top five with $1.67 million. While the Tom Cruise vehicle debuted softly, it has held up fairly well since then and was able to clear the $50 million mark yesterday. On the international front, Knight and Day has grossed $24.7 million to date and will soon be opening in a number of major international markets.
