Paramount continued to claim first and second positions at the box office on Tuesday with its Paranormal Activity 2 and Jackass 3D. Paranormal Activity 2 led the way with $2.21 million, which was down 9 percent from Monday. That represented one of the day's poorer daily holds among wide releases, but was also on par with the 9 percent Tuesday decline last year's Paranormal Activity experienced during its first Tuesday of major release. Paranormal Activity 2 has grossed an impressive $45.31 million through five days, placing it 2 percent ahead of the pace of 2004's The Grudge (without taking into account ticket price inflation).
Jackass 3D took second place with $1.72 million. The 3D sequel was down 3 percent from Monday and down 57 percent from last Tuesday. After a terrific opening weekend performance, Jackass 3D has had a hard time stabilizing. However, given the scope of the film's start, its lack of holding power simply isn't an issue and was to be expected. Jackass 3D topped the $90 million mark yesterday and currently boasts a twelve-day gross of $90.36 million. The film is set to top the $100 million mark by the end of the upcoming weekend.
Red held steady in third place with $1.26 million. Summit's action-comedy starring Bruce Willis was up 13 percent from Monday and down a healthy 33 percent from last Tuesday. The twelve-day gross for Red stands at a better than expected $45.91 million. Red is set to zoom past the $50 million mark over the weekend and is in good shape to experience another good weekend hold, even with Halloween falling during the weekend.
Warner's Hereafter remained in fourth place with $1.01 million. The Clint Eastwood directed film was up a very solid 14 percent over Monday. With Hereafter skewing very heavily towards older moviegoers it is likely to continue to hold up well throughout the rest of the midweek. After five days of wide release Hereafter has grossed $14.23 million. That is in line with its modest expectations and places it 22 percent ahead of the pace of 2008's Changeling.
Secretariat rounded out the day's unchanged top five with $0.61 million. The sports drama from Disney was up 11 percent over Monday and down a slim 26 percent from last Tuesday. Yesterday saw Secretariat finally overtake Warner's Life as We Know It in the total gross column. Secretariat has grossed $38.596 million in 19 days, giving it a $41,149 lead over the $38.544 million 19-day gross of Life as We Know It.
