Warner's Due Date led the daily box office for a second straight day on Tuesday. The Todd Phillips directed comedy starring Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis grossed $2.52 million for the day. Due Date was up 9 percent from Monday, which represented a very solid daily hold, especially when considering the film was coming off of a nice daily hold on Monday. Due Date has grossed $37.53 million through five days of release and will likely clear the $40 million mark today. Thus far Due Date is running 57 percent ahead of the pace of 2008's Role Models and 26 percent behind 2007's American Gangster. With Veterans Day falling on Thursday, daily holds for Due Date and all other releases should be strong today and especially on Thursday.
Megamind stabilized on Tuesday to remain in second place with $1.87 million. The latest 3D computer animated film from Paramount and DreamWorks Animation was up 1 percent over Monday. Midweek grosses for Megamind haven't been all that strong so far this week, but that should change in a very big way today and Thursday thanks to the Veterans Day holiday. Megamind has grossed $49.75 million through five days and will zoom past the $50 million mark today. The film is currently running 13 percent ahead of the pace of 2005's Chicken Little (which also opened two weeks before a Harry Potter film).
For Colored Girls held steady in third with $1.05 million. However, the latest Lionsgate release from director Tyler Perry was down 8 percent from Monday. That represented the day's poorest daily hold among wide releases. Before its release For Colored Girls seemed poised to have a lengthier box office run than is normally the case for Perry's films, but so far it isn't playing out that way. With that said, For Colored Girls has still grossed a very solid $21.69 million in its first five days. The film continues to run 12 percent ahead of the pace of 2008's The Family That Preys and 11 percent behind 2007's Why Did I Get Married?
Summit's Red continued to claim fourth place with a daily take of $0.64 million. The action-comedy starring Bruce Willis was up a healthy 19 percent over Monday, but down 47 percent from last Tuesday (when grosses in general were inflated by Election Day). Red has grossed a better than expected $72.84 million through 26 days of release, giving it a current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 3.35 to 1.
R-rated horror films Saw 3D and Paranormal Activity 2 claimed fifth and sixth for the day. Lionsgate's Saw 3D was up a solid 13 percent from Monday to gross $0.59 million, while Paramount's Paranormal Activity 2 was up 4 percent to gross $0.41 million. Saw 3D will reach the $40 million mark either today or Thursday and Paranormal Activity 2 is set to clear the $80 million mark over the coming weekend.
