Saw 3D rounded out its first week in theatres with a seventh consecutive first place finish on Thursday. The seventh installment of the horror franchise from Lionsgate grossed $1.23 million. Saw 3D was down only 3 percent from Wednesday, but the decline still represented the day's poorest daily hold among wide releases. Saw 3D finished in first place for the week with $30.60 million, which was on the higher end of pre-release expectations. Saw 3D is current running 77 percent ahead of the pace of last year's Saw VI and 14 percent behind the pace of 2008's Saw V.
Summit's Red claimed second place for a third straight day. The action-comedy grossed $1.08 million, which was up 13 percent from Wednesday and down only 4 percent from last Thursday. It should be noted that Thursday holds were strong in general yesterday, likely in part from moviegoers wanting to catch current releases before they lost screens today to this weekend's three highly anticipated releases. Red placed in third for the week with $14.92 million and has grossed a better than expected $63.01 million in three weeks of release.
Paramount's Jackass 3D held steady in third with $0.95 million. The blockbuster 3D sequel was up a solid 8 percent over Wednesday and down 30 percent from last Thursday. After experiencing another sharp decline last weekend, Jackass 3D stabilized quite nicely during the midweek. Jackass 3D finished in fourth for the week with $12.56 million. That was down 54 percent from the previous frame and brings the film's three-week total to $105.72 million.
Fellow Paramount release Paranormal Activity 2 finished in fourth for a second straight day. The low-budget horror sequel grossed $0.89 million, which was up 5 percent from Wednesday and down a steep 55 percent from last Thursday. Paranormal Activity 2 placed in second for the week with $20.77 million and has grossed $69.93 million through two weeks of release. Paranormal Activity 2 will surpass the $70 million mark today, but is set to experience another large decline this weekend.
Disney's Secretariat leaped over Warner's Hereafter to claim fifth place for the day. Secretariat was up a healthy 25 percent from Wednesday to gross $0.595 million. Hereafter was up a slim 2 percent from the previous day to follow closely behind in sixth with $0.584 million. To date Secretariat has grossed a solid $46.96 million through four weeks, while Hereafter has grossed a lackluster $24.71 million after two weeks of wide release.
