Video Event of the Week: Might Music Box's DVD of The Girl Who Played With Fire, the (eventually to be remade in America) second Swedish installment of thriller novelist Stieg Larsson's Millenium Trilogy, be what we're talking about? Could Sony's DVD of Wild Grass, the latest philosophical comedy from the great French filmmaker Alain Resnais, conceivably get the nod? Or against all that is good and holy in this world, might New Line's various disc editions of Sex and the City 2, the latest filmic entry in the continuing saga of three whores and their mom, by any chance be The One(s)?
All worthy to be sure, except for that last piece of crap, obviously, but for my money it's simply got to be -- Disney's deluxe Blu-ray/DVD combo pack version of Toy Story 3.
As for the film itself, I have little to say except that it's on balance the best Pixar production to date, notwithstanding the masterpiece that was Wall-E. This one may not be as (sorry) profound or original, but it's nonetheless about as accomplished a pop entertainment as you're ever going to see -- overflowing with wit and creativity, visually dazzling and possessed of a heart bigger than the proverbial outdoors. If the finale, the capper to the entire series and deeply emotionally and dramatically satisfying, doesn't get you a little verklempt you need to consult your physician, although part of the beauty of it is that you don't need have to seen either of the previous entries to get it.

Two postscripts to the above: I would like to state, and for the record, that the big action scene that precedes the aforementioned emotional finale is as scary, suspenseful and well-staged as any similar sequence in a Hollywood film in ages, animated or otherwise. Actually, I'm hard pressed to think of a recent live action seuence with anywhere near the narrative coherence that director Lee Unkrich and the Pixar artists toss off so (seemingly) effortlessly here. I should also add (and I've written about this before) that TS3 is worth seeing if for no other reason than the flashback that begins with the shot above; Chuckles (as sad a clown as ever was, and if his name isn't a sly homage to a classic Mary Tyler Moore Show episode than I'm Marie of Rumania) is about to launch into a voice-over explaining why the sinister Lots-O-Huggin' Bear (a brilliant Ned Beatty) is so evil ("Something changed that day inside Lotso; something snapped!"). It's a great scene, on the knife-edge between genuinely affecting and melodramatically ridiculous, and it's also a very sly send-up of every solemn and portentous super-villain secret origin you ever read in a Marvel Comic.
The disc package under discussion here is predictably state of the art, which is to say that the transfer as seen on both the DVD and Blu-ray versions is flawless. If you have a decent monitor both discs have images all but indistinguishable from what you saw in the theaters; the Blu-ray is perhaps incrementally more detailed, but you can't go wrong with either. The set also includes a handy digital copy disc (I watched the thing on my iPod and enjoyed it thoroughly); as for bonuses, both discs have "Day and Night," the charming Pixar short that preceded the film in your local Hell Octoplex, plus a Buzz Lightyear featurette. There's a fourth disc with bonuses galore, including an interactive game, more making-of docs than I could count, and some other stuff I'll leave for you to discover.
The bottom line is that Toy Story 3 is not just the best animated film in memory, but one of the best recent American films period; you can order it over here and should immediately.

Bogart and much of the rest of the cast of The Maltese Falcon return for a generally entertaining WWII spy thriller, but the flashback within a flashback within a flashback narrative structure is, shall we say, confounding at times.

I haven't seen it in years, but I think you left out a flashback in Across the Pacific. Really. if memory serves, I think I counted four, and was quite astonished about it.

I'm glad you mentioned that because it took me YEARS to figure out what Ed was getting at: the poor guy gassed himself to death. With a radiator. Of course, it makes no sense, but it probably would have cost a dollar more to cut to a shot of an open oven and Ed just didn't have the time or money!
As for worst flashback ever, I have an obscure but obvious contender: We all know Larry Buchanan made rotten movies (Zontar, The the Eye Creatures), but in 68-69 he made one that was really pond scum -- It's Alive (not to be confused with the 80s horror flick), with a bloated drunken Tommy Kirk and the usual Buchanan regulars. I won't bother you with the "plot," but in the middle of the film, the whole thing comes to a complete dead halt for ALMOST 20 MINUTES as one of the lead characters has a flashback about how she was enslaved by the villain; it's all silent footage and even her voiceover trails off after a few minutes, leaving you with library music and flat grainy scenes of her looking horrified. I chatted over the phone with Buchanan briefly, in the early 90s. He was kind enough to send me a VHS of his "Beyond the Doors" film which I was going to snark about (although that's not how I phrased it) in a video magazine I was working for at the time.
"Beyond the Doors," BTW, which is about the CIA conpsiring to kill Hendrix, Joplin and Jim Morrison, and which features some truly mindblowing scenes that are supposed to be Woodstock (filmed in a high school gym) really deserves a high-def Blu-ray restored version.
Buchanan's been dead for a few years, however, and I'm not sure who the hell owns his film vault, or if such has even survived

Buchanan, as far as I can tell, was one of those guys who had no talent but absolutely loved LOVED making movies, and that alone redeems a lot of his stuff.
We own 4 or 5 of his movies (unMST'd, by the way) and return to them for fun more often than we do a lot of "serious" films.

Lolita and Citizen Kane are almost entirely flashbacks, are they not? But if the whole film is the flashback, I don't think it really counts. Trey

One of the best flashback films is "Annie Hall." The structure is actually quite complicated with the way it flits back & forth in time, but it's so well written, directed & edited that the flow is very natural and the structure never calls attention to itself.

As it is on TCM as I write, The Spirit of St Louis is almost all VO and flashback, and not well done. One would expect something more graceful from Billy Wilder. But, if you're stuck with a story about a guy alone in a plane for 40 hours, I guess you do what you can.
The Opposite of Sex, a bunch of jokes in search of a movie, made very effective use of the VO to tell the contra story.
Not my favorite Kurosawa film, but Rashoman is all flashbacks.
